Ice Maker Stops Too Early — or Never Stops? The Bin-Full Sensor Story

Every ice maker has one small existential question to answer, over and over: is the bin full? Get the answer wrong in one direction and you're rationing cubes from a bin that's never more than a sad layer deep; wrong in the other and the maker buries itself in its own product. The component answering that question is either a humble wire arm or an invisible infrared beam — and both fail in ways worth two minutes of checking before anyone orders a part.

The wire arm: honest, mechanical, easily bullied

Classic makers use a feeler arm that rides the ice pile — pile high, arm up, production pauses. Its failure modes are charmingly physical: a bag of peas parks the arm in the raised "full" position and production quietly stops; a freezer rearrangement leaves it wedged down and the maker never rests. Check the arm swings freely through its whole travel, isn't bent from a past collision, and hasn't been clicked into its shutoff detent by accident — that detent is also the legitimate off switch, worth knowing on purpose.

The invisible beam: smarter, moodier

Most modern French-door units replaced the arm with an infrared eye across the bin mouth. It's tidy until something interrupts the conversation: a frost film over the emitter or receiver windows (our damp air is good at this), a cube welded in the beam path, a bin seated a centimeter off its rails, or condensation fogging the lens after a door-open party. Symptoms split the same way: beam falsely "blocked" — production stops with a half-empty bin; beam falsely "clear" — overflow. The two-minute check: bin out, windows wiped dry, beam path cleared, bin reseated firmly. Many models blink a diagnostic pattern at the eye when you press the door switch — your manual decodes it.

When it's genuinely the part

An arm mechanism that's floppy at the module, or an eye that fails its blink test with clean windows and a seated bin, has earned replacement — arms and springs are cheap; sensor boards are modest and usually swap with the assembly. And one impostor to rule out: a freezer running warm makes slow ice that looks like early shutoff; the ten-dollar thermometer check comes first, always.
